Lu Han has not met love yet, though he knows he'll recognize love when it appears, or when it announces its presence. He is fond of sappy romantic movies that he watches on his laptop during his procrastination day as he likes to call it. And he firmly believes, his encounter with love will be magical as though his future love story is a movie came to life.
Lu Han goes to a university in Shanghai, though he is contemplating to transfer to Beijing because there's no place like home. He majors in Creative Writing and he is very talented in Spoken Poetry. His parents wanted him to be an engineer but, he declared: "I believe that I was not born to do numbers but words. I was born to speak and write and therefore, I will."
Yixing nearly chokes when he finished reading his mate's poem for his future love. No one can beat Lu Han when it comes to metaphors, simile, hyperbole... in short, flowery and exaggerated words. Yixing, a Music major, is pretty sure his friend's poem will be less sappy if he were to make it a song.
Lu Han has met love at the hallway, when he was rushing for his next class. Love briefly glances at him and smiles as he enters the Chemistry Lab 1 which is a few walks away from his room.
He can feel a knot forming in his stomach. How can he not met love before? They are so near, yet so far. He gathers himself and walks like a fine, calm and collected gentleman he is (before he came across love).
He bothers Yixing later that night, though the younger doesn't pay attention. He wants to talk about love with someone so badly and his younger dorm mate is the only option. No one knows about his obsession about love except for him.
There's no way to get his attention unless he causes a ruckus and so he does. And well, at least there's no need to resort to plan B (which is a violent way to get Yixing to listen to his blabber about love and besides, Lu Han doesn't want to end up in a jail now that he has met love).
He's taking a pre-med program. He's tiny and cute. He has a gorgeous smile and he looks good wearing his white lab gown. I bet he's a smart-ass and I'd like to see him, ass high up in the air waiting to be smacked by my glorious hands.
Lu Han tells Yixing a lot about what he saw and what he inferred from seeing love for the first time in his entire 20 years of existence. He gets embarrassed after realizing, he may have told Yixing a dirty desire he has in thoughts of love.
"Our encounter is not as magical as I thought it would be. He isn't doing arts as I wanted him to be, but I'm sure, love is all the other things I expected him to be."
Yixing shakes his head and goes back to reading. Clearly, it is so obvious to the younger that Lu Han does not have any idea about what love is.
He sees love in a coffee shop located in front of the university. He sees him sipping a black coffee, just plain black and he hates it. He hates his taste, not him. He has yet to know deeply about what kind of person his love is, so he won't judge him based on his coffee preference.
He formally meets love in a soccer match organized by a mutual friend. By mutual, he means Yixing. He finds out he's Korean and his name is Kim Minseok, not Edward or Andrew or Christian much to his disappointment. Look at the bright side, we both love soccer! Lu Han encourages himself.
"Yixing, he's the one I was telling you about!" He whispers in to his younger friend's ear excitedly. He giggles like a teenage girl who just saw her crush walk pass by and Yixing feels embarrassed all of a sudden.
After the game ends, Minseok declares he has to go and pick up his younger brother Junmyeon from school. He smiles at them and waves good bye with his two tiny hands which Lu Han finds very endearing.
Love is a Minseok, a Korean. Although I wanted a European, with a pleasant British accent, I'd still prefer Love. Lu Han tells Yixing, as if he is doing an on the spot spoken poetry. Yixing shrugs and just laughs humorlessly.
He asks Minseok out for a movie and he lets him pick according to what he prefers. The pre-med student chooses a film which is completely out of his league, a film which isn't romance. He figures, his prayers aren't answered when he hears Minseok telling him: I'd like to watch The Guardians of The Galaxy.
They head for dinner afterwards. There, he finds out Minseok is a vegetarian and is absolutely avoiding meat at all cost. He also discovers that love doesn't fancy sappy romance films (that's why he ended up choosing the movie they watched a few moments ago).
He sends love home and he is amused to see his place. He has a nice couch, a simple bed sheet and his nose doesn't hate sniffing the aromatic smell his small place has.
He tells Yixing what happened that day and his disappointments about love. Love hates romance films, he doesn't love meat like I do and he doesn't talk unless spoken to.
Lu Han asks love to be more than friends despite his complaints to Yixing. He still loves him anyway, despite the contradicting facts about them. Minseok knows, it'll be hard to actually distort and change his boyfriend's view of what love is but it won't hurt to try.
"You could always shut Lu Han up when he complains about you not being the one he expects you to be." Yixing removes his dirty cleat and looks at the older with a hint of pity in his eyes.
Minseok gulps and scratches the back of his neck. He knows Lu Han can get kind of persistent and so he answers back: "I'll try."
He makes a poem for Minseok every now and then & reads it in the most romantic way he can. The older has gotten used to it that romantic stuff doesn't bother him anymore. Minseok thinks, he'll try necessary adjustments to fit in to the mold Lu Han made for his love.
Love changed Minseok. Love made Minseok like what he hated before. Love made Minseok a different person and he isn't sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. As long as Lu Han stays, he'll allow love to change him. He'll humbly succumb as long as he can keep Lu Han by his side.
Lu Han graduates the same year his love does. They agree to move in to the same apartment, share the same bedroom, bathroom, couch... almost everything that they can think of sharing. Minseok likes the idea, if that's what Lu Han wanted.
"You can always reject Lu Han's suggestion, you know? You're spoiling the big baby." Yixing shakes his head in disappointment.
Love makes Lu Han feel special. He makes him appreciate himself more because of the constant affection and praises. Lu Han finds it really sweet and he'll always ends up smiling (and writing a poem. He's got tons of them now, waiting to be published).
Minseok tells him, "You're beautiful", when he's tired or when he smiles. He tells him that when they fight and Lu Han will immediately give in. He tells him that when they make out and Lu Han becomes extra nice (he lets him top). He tells him that when Lu Han just came from work (and that's one of the reasons why he looks forward to going home after a long day at work).
He tells him that when he wanted to hear it the most. He tells him that even if he doesn't want to hear it. He tells him that whenever he has that chance to. But if Lu Han has to be honest, Minseok, his love, is more beautiful.
Love cries too. He is not always happy and love also forgets to tell him "You're beautiful" sometimes. Love isn't perfect and Lu Han is too narrow-minded to realize that fact.
"Lu Han, I'm tired." He says as he dries his tears, those precious tears. "Let's break up." He holds his luggage tight already preparing to leave the place he once called home, the place that contains too many pain and happiness.
Lu Han swallows his sobs and he smiles at him courageously. He is reminded of everything, what he did that tired out his love and what he did that made love decided to leave. And the flashbacks make him sick, they make him hate himself. Despite that, he smiles and says: "Thank you for stopping by."
Minseok loved him despite his shortcomings. Minseok loved him in spite of every harsh words he has uttered. Minseok loved him for everything he is.
Now, love may be in a different place, with a mismatching timezone. Love may have found someone other than him. Love may be happier, love may be smiling not because of him. Love may be hearing I love you everyday, three words that Lu Han had forgotten to say.
And so, before Lu Han's book (of poems) gets published, he makes sure to include the words, Love is all others things you didn't expect it to be, to remind everyone that love shits, that love isn't perfect, but it will make you smile. He reminds everyone to never let go of love despite the irregularities, the differences and the discrepancies.
